HOME 9 BIOGRAPHY

Antonio Amat studied art in Barcelona, where he gained a deep knowledge of the techniques and theories of art. In 1975, he was awarded the prize for best local artist in Martorell and held his first exhibition in Celler de Cal Nicolau, Barcelona. In the 1980s, he set up the Bartallegi design studio, a pioneer that was one of the first corporate and product identity companies in Barcelona. Since the 1990s, he has worked as a professional artist.
In an initial stage, which lasted until 1980, surrealism was notably present, influenced by Salvador Dalí, whom he met in person at his studio in Port Lligat. Antonio Amat went through various creative stages and delved into various disciplines of artistic expression, philosophy and various currents of thought. In the 1990s, his personal artistic language came to the fore, leading to his current work in which he is making a significant contribution to contemporary art.
“Amat is a leading figure in the international art scene with a unique, individual vision of abstract art”, ArtsSpike (NY). He has held exhibitions in Barcelona, New York, various cities in France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and takes part in national and international art fairs. At the end of 1999, he published a monograph, which brings together his different pictorial stages. It was written by Conxita Oliver and published by Mediterránea (Barcelona).
Since then, Amat’s work has incorporated a third dimension, and various variables were added, both material and conceptual, in various artworks that he began in the first decade of the 2000s. His artwork expands the possibilities of expressing the apparently known and opens the door to intellectual play and expression. The power of gesture and the indisputable light of colour strengthen his artworks and add a vital spirit to his canvases.
Since 2000, he has collaborated with the Galeria Maeght gallery in Barcelona on an ongoing basis, holding solo and group exhibitions together with artists from the gallery such as Joan Miro, Antoni Tapies and Eduardo Chillida.
The solo exhibition titled “The mystery of alchemy” was held in Galería Maeght in 2003, displaying medium-sized and large-form works, and artworks on paper, as well as sculptures, in which the maturity and strength of his artistic language comes forth. This exhibition had a great impact on his career.
That decade he held several solo exhibitions in cities in Europe and the United States. In 2010, he collaborated with Etra Fine Art Gallery in Miami, USA, working and displaying his work regularly in solo and group exhibitions with Hunt Slonem, Donald Sultan and Robert Indiana.
In 2011, he took part in the “We the Artist” exhibition at the National Museum of Trinidad & Tobago (curator Nicollette Ramirez), which presented a selection of artists in different disciplines from around the world, with Marina Abramovic, Spencer Tunick, Anselm Reyle and Ashley Bickerton.
Origin, essence, the elements, intercultural aspects and contemporaneity are concepts in Amat’s work, which he has been developing to the present day.
